The International Conference on Computing and Missions (ICCM) is an annual informal (NO ties allowed!) gathering of women and men who have a common interest in computers and mission. We share a vision of cooperation for effective use of technology bringing the Gospel to every nation.

ICCM 2003 Post-Conference Workshop: Application Development and Reporting with Centrallix

As in years past, there will be workshops held in conjunction with ICCM again this year. One of the workshops we will be doing this year will be dedicated to the Centrallix application server (www.centrallix.net), and its use in web-based business application development, reporting, and more.

TOPIC:Application Development and Reporting with Centrallix
WHY:Centrallix is a strategic R&D project of LightSys Technology Services, in conjunction with others including several Taylor University students. As we have traveled and seen the information technology needs in missions, we have used that knowledge to help design this product, and we have become more and more convinced of this system's applicability in a missions environment, as envisioned (though it is not yet complete!). Our hope is to acquaint you with Centrallix so you can use it in your ministry as it matures. We also hope to use this workshop as a starting point for those who would like to be involved in the development of Kardia as that project gets off the ground.
WHAT:We will be covering the installation and configuration of Centrallix as well as the development of simple web-based applications and reporting. If you are not familiar with Centrallix, it is a web-based application server capable of generating "real"-looking applications into a web browser, and is cross-platform. It also features an object/rule based infrastructure, a report writer, highly flexible and transparent data access and abstraction, and more. It is an open-source product and is freely available. See www.centrallix.net for more info.
WHO:This course will be led by Greg Beeley and Tim Young of LightSys.
HOW:The course will follow the style of previous LightSys workshops, and will be a combination of lecture/demonstration sessions and hands-on lab exercises, using an actual Centrallix setup. Participants will receive a Centrallix workbook, lab exercise worksheets, and a current copy of the product on CDROM.
WHEN:The workshop will be held for 2 days following the ICCM 2003 conference, beginning with a mid-afternoon intro session on Tuesday the 3th, and ending with lunch on Thursday afternoon the 5th. You have the option of either attending the first day only (ending with Lunch on the 4th), or attending both days. If you attend the first day only, you can sign up for a different workshop on the second day (such as the Wireless workshop), or travel home after the first day.
WHERE:Taylor University's Upland Campus. Lodging, meals, and snacks will be provided.
TRAVEL:Airport transportation is available. However, there will only be one airport run provided by Taylor after the end of the workshop. The trip to the airport leaves at 1:00pm and takes 1½ hours, and we recommend arriving at the airport a full 2 hours ahead of time. Thus, the earliest your flight could leave would be 4:30pm. Any other travel arrangements you would need to set up yourself (e.g., rental car, etc.). There will be no transportation from the airport to Taylor at the beginning of the workshop -- workshop attendees really should be signed up for ICCM as well, or else provide their own transportation to Taylor.
COST:$125 to cover lodging, meals, and course materials for two days, or $75 for the one day version. There is no charge for tuition. There is an additional charge for airport transportation - see the ICCM registration form.
REGISTRATION:Please register when you sign up for ICCM.
SCHEDULE:The following tentative schedule is subject to change. The computer labs will be open in the evenings for those who desire to use them, or who need "catch-up" time, but there will be no sessions in the evenings, except perhaps an informal discussion or two. Note that not all of the below topics are given equal emphasis.

	  First Day:

TUES 3RD I1: Introduction to the Workshop
                    C1: About Centrallix
		    C2: Installation and Configuration
		    C3: Basic Application Development

WED 4TH C4: Report Writing with Centrallix
C5: Other Objects, Data Access, and Features

	  Second Day:

WED 4TH C6: Intermediate Application Development
		    TBA

          THUR 5TH TBA

You can register for this workshop with your registration for the ICCM conference itself.

NOTE: if you are planning to register for this workshop, please send me an email at Greg.Beeley@LightSys.org so that we can keep track of how many intend to register (but please do not use that email address to actually register!). Thank You!! Include the following information: 1) name and email, 2) whether you are coming for one or two days, 3) if you are bringing a laptop, and if so, its make/speed/os/etc and whether you want to use it for the lab exercises, and 4) what the main things are that interest you about the workshop.

Blessings in Him,

Greg Beeley
