The International Conference on Computing and Missions (ICCM) is an annual informal (NO ties allowed!) gathering of women and men who have a common interest in computers and mission. We share a vision of cooperation for effective use of technology bringing the Gospel to every nation.

ICCM 2002 Post-Conference Workshop: Internetworking and Information Security

As in years past, there will be workshops held in conjunction with ICCM again this year. One of the workshops we will be doing this year will be an "Internetworking and Security Workshop" designed to help familiarize you with some tools, methods, and concepts related to networking, security, and secure networking.

TOPIC:Internetworking and Information Security (using Linux)
WHY:Our desire is to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and tools you need to better secure your network and to more effectively communicate securely over the Internet. Our hope is that you will come away from this workshop with some valuable skills, but also very much challenged and provoked to some serious thought.
WHAT:We will be covering some fundamentals and advanced topics in basic TCP/IP networking, concepts and implementation of network security, and ideas and tools for secure wide-area networking. We will be using Linux as the operating system, though many of the concepts taught apply to many other environments as well.
WHO:This course will be led by Greg Beeley and Tim Young of LightSys.
HOW:The workshop will consist of lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on lab exercises. Participants will receive a workbook, including CDROM(s), and will have a workstation for the hands-on exercises in the lab. One entire afternoon (4 hours) will be devoted to "recognizing the enemy: intrusion detection and recovery". We will network the computers in such a way as to create a miniature internetwork in the lab.
WHEN:The workshop will be held for 3 days following the ICCM 2002 conference, beginning with a mid-afternoon intro session on Tuesday the 4th, and ending with lunch on Friday afternoon the 7th.
WHERE:Taylor University's Upland Campus. Lodging, meals, and snacks will be provided.
TRAVEL:Airport transportation is available. However, there will only be one airport run provided by Taylor after the end of the workshop. The trip to the airport leaves at 1:00pm and takes 1½ hours, and we recommend arriving at the airport a full 2 hours ahead of time. Thus, the earliest your flight could leave would be 4:30pm. Any other travel arrangements you would need to set up yourself (e.g., rental car, etc.)
COST:$175 to cover lodging, meals, and course materials. There is no charge for tuition.
REGISTRATION:Please register when you sign up for ICCM. For the workshop (not for ICCM!), there will be a maximum enrollment of 24 participants; however if interest exceeds 24, we may try to find ways to accommodate that.
SCHEDULE:The following tentative schedule is subject to change. The computer labs will be open in the evenings for those who desire to use them, or who need "catch-up" time, but there will be no sessions in the evenings, except for lab time on Tuesday night to get Linux installed on your lab computer. Note that not all of the below topics are given equal emphasis.
TUES 4TH I1: Introduction to the Workshop
N1: How Does TCP/IP Work? (lecture & participatory demo)
                    Install Operating System on Machine.

WED 5TH N2: Basic routing, subnetting, and CIDR
N3: Masquerading, NAT, and IP Tunneling
N4: Advanced routing with Linux "iproute"
S1: Security with SSH (brief overview)
S2: Virtual Private Networking (VPN) technologies

THUR 6TH F1: Firewalling Concepts and Policy Planning
                    F2: Packet Filtering with "iptables"/"ipchains"
F3: Prebuilt Firewalling Solutions for Linux (brief)
                    F4: Proxy Applications (squid,apache,dns,etc)
F5: Intrusion Detection and Recovery (extensive lab)

FRI 7TH S3: Secure Services with SSL/TLS (https, etc.)
                    S4: Secure Email Tools Discussion
You can register for this workshop with your registration for the ICCM conference itself.

NOTE: if you are planning to register for this workshop, please send me an email at Greg.Beeley@LightSys.org so that we can keep track of how many intend to register (but please do not use that email address to actually register!). Thank You!!

Blessings in Him,
